ATES — Automation for Energy-Efficient Storage of Heat and Cooling
ATES — Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage — makes it possible to store thermal energy in the subsurface and use it at a later point in time.
Overview
The project at a glance
01
Sector
Industry, cosmetics manufacturing
02
Technology
Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES)
03
Scope
PLC programming, SCADA and commissioning
04
Purpose
Cooling and heating of production areas and buildings
Technology
Using temperature differences over time
The technology can be used to reduce energy consumption for cooling and heating by making use of temperature differences over time. Heat from periods with a cooling demand can be stored and later used for heating, while stored cold can be used in the same way when a new cooling demand arises.
Background
The project
Proces-Automatik has delivered the automation solution for a new ATES facility at a manufacturing company in the cosmetics industry.
The facility is used for both cooling and heating of the company’s production areas and buildings, and is therefore an integrated part of the company’s overall energy supply.
Delivery
Our scope of delivery
Proces-Automatik’s delivery has covered PLC programming, SCADA and commissioning. The automation system controls and monitors the ATES facility and gives operators a single operational overview of plant status, temperatures and alarms, among other things.
The role of the control system is to ensure that the stored thermal energy can be used in a controlled way in relation to the company’s current cooling and heating requirements. The ATES facility is therefore not an isolated technical installation, but an active part of the company’s overall energy system.
PLC programming
The automation system controls and monitors the ATES facility.
SCADA
A single operational overview of plant status, temperatures and alarms, among other things.
Commissioning
Commissioning of the automation solution for the new ATES facility.
Approach
The approach behind it
The project is an example of Proces-Automatik’s work with automation in energy and utility systems, where process control and energy efficiency have to work together in daily operation.
FAQ
Engineering Insights
The questions we get from industrial operators and project managers — most weeks.
What is ATES?
ATES — Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage — makes it possible to store thermal energy in the subsurface and use it at a later point in time, for example by storing heat from periods with a cooling demand and using it later for heating.
What did Proces-Automatik deliver on the project?
PLC programming, SCADA and commissioning of the automation solution for a new ATES facility.
What does the automation system give the operators?
It controls and monitors the ATES facility and gives operators a single operational overview of plant status, temperatures and alarms, among other things.
